Slightly Soiled

*** James likes a well-scrubbed ship. He prefers to have a well-scrubbed life as well—the vast majority of the time. Clean, organized things make for a clean, organized, untroublesome life. Too much dirt can clog a cannon so its charge explodes belowdecks instead of outward, or can ruin a perfectly happy friendship, or mar a worldview to the point that one is paralyzed by indecision. On the other hand, sometimes cleanliness can become tiresome in and of itself. And sometimes a little dust underfoot is better for gripping. “Oh, I forgot,” Will says, rubbing self-consciously at the soot on his cheek. “I’ll go wash up.” “Leave it. It’s not that much, and it’s been months,” James replies, drawing him back. *** |
