*** The Pearl groans as she bellies through the midnight swells, and Jack groans with her. The air is damp, clammy, and seeps uneasily over him as he curls tight in his hammock. Strange things are afoot tonight, whispering at his ears and dragging cold fingers over his shoulder. Jack… “Go ‘way,” he mutters. A leak’s sprung overhead, funneling the condensation onto his bare neck. He shivers and brushes it away, but the chilling wetness persists. “Go away, damn it. I’ll have none of that while I’m abed.” But I am going away. That’s why I came. And Jack turns around to see the last traces of a strong jaw, sad eyes and commodore’s hat evaporate into the air. *** |
