*** The right drawer yielded up one spare wig, oddly crushed. Jack lingered over it for several seconds, but ultimately dismissed it as a red herring. Left drawer gave him several neatly-stacked bottles of ink, a penknife, shavings from quill-tips, and some blank parchment. The lower drawers on either side revealed nothing more interesting than a bad sketch of a small ship, apparently done in order to work out some newfangled method of rigging. He was almost ready to give up when his fingers brought out a small pebble from the back corner of the center drawer. It was unremarkable but for the hole that sand and water had worn through the middle, and had no obvious practical application. There was hope yet, then. *** |
