Inattention

*** Tristan walks off a few steps, then swerves about and comes back to stare. He lifts his hands halfway to the clumped locks straggling down his cheeks, then drops them, and then finally raises them again to point. “That creek wasn’t there. I didn’t see it.” “Well, I didn’t either,” Gawain laughs, wringing out his hair. “Hence why we’re wet and unhorsed.” “No, I didn’t see it,” Tristan repeats, and finally Gawain hears the distress underlying the words. “I was…distracted.” And the look Tristan gives Gawain then, half-confused and half-reluctant to know, dries out Gawain’s mouth and turns his palms even clammier. It seems neither of them had been looking where they’d been supposed to. *** |
