*** If Sky remembers why he plays chess, he does not ever show any sign of it. It seems as if he was molded out of droplets falling on stone, built up before the counters with one fingertip grooving the slight dips in the edge of the table. The hang of his sleeve, the passing of shadows over his face as he considers his next move, they all fall into harmony with the rippling wash of water off the roof tiles. Occasionally he has to lean far over in order to push his counter into place, and the dull shaft of the spear beside him becomes visible. It is hard, definite, of clean slicing lines. And then Nameless breathes a little, remembering why Sky wishes to play chess, and moves on. *** |
