*** As he hands the cup of brimming black tea to Sky, he asks: “And how will Broken Sword know that you have sent me?” Sky closes his fingers around the cup, but lets its cool smoothness slip to splatter shards and beads of amber on the wood planks. He leans forward and hands catch at his shoulders, making his palm slap down on one crescent slice of porcelain. The blood runs into the tea and turns it to thick rust. His fingertip sketches quickly over the rough grain while his shoulders press into warm palms, while he feels the air above his head beat with life. “Because you will ask him for the twentieth way of writing ‘sword.’” “There are only nineteen.” Puzzlement stirs the breath. Sky raises his head and shrugs to let the hands glide from his shoulders to his bandaged side. “What is most difficult and most valuable is never spoken of.” *** |
