*** The vagaries of fate had decided to take Dean into the heart of Mexico and then leave him staring at the long-since burnt ruins of a bookstore. It would have been nice to swear and kick and maybe break something, but some old women across the street were staring at him with an intense dullness that discouraged such a reaction. So he snarled and pulled out his cigarettes. “You’re smoking at an arson site,” someone suddenly said. An American someone, moreover, who was pale and skinny and too damn close. He laughed when Dean jerked back. “Irony’s always a good thing to have.” “Arson?” Dean asked, and then he realized he shouldn’t have. But the other man was already darting at the opening, dark sunglasses gleaming like razors as he half-turned. “Buy me a drink, professor. Do that and I’ll tell you a little story.” *** |
