It was the first time someone had been killed before his eyes and he hadn’t fainted directly afterward. Still, Ichabod felt no pride in his achievement.
The witch dead, and her innocent stepdaughter also: Katrina’s headless body was almost hidden under the billowing folds of the second Mrs. Van Tassel’s dress. But the long gold locks were visible enough, and the shocked expression, hanging right in front of Ichabod.
“We’ve closed more than one door today, you and I,” he whispered to the Hessian, who almost looked regretful. “Now I’ll never know. About either—about what it would have been like, without the taint of suspicion.”
